Gmail vs Outlook Accounts: Which One Should You Buy?
How Gmail and Outlook accounts differ for sign-ups, outreach and everyday use, and what to check in each before you buy.
Both are free email services, both work almost everywhere, and both can be bought ready-made. The right choice depends on what you need the mailbox for.
Gmail: the default for most sign-ups
A Gmail address is also a Google account, so it opens YouTube, Google Drive, Google Ads and Android in one go. Many services trust Gmail addresses at sign-up. Older Gmail accounts are especially useful when a new address keeps getting asked for phone verification.
Outlook: good for Microsoft tools
An Outlook (or Hotmail) address is a Microsoft account. It works with Teams, OneDrive, Xbox and Office. Outlook mailboxes are often cheaper in bulk and are a solid choice when you need several separate inboxes for projects.
What to check in both
- The age of the account
- Whether a recovery email or phone is attached, and whether you can change it
- Whether IMAP, POP or app passwords work, if you want to use the mailbox in an email program
- The country the account was made in
Sending email from a bought mailbox
Start slowly. Send a few normal messages first and increase over days, not hours. A brand-new setup that suddenly sends hundreds of emails is the fastest way to get any mailbox blocked, whichever provider it is.
Quick answer
Need a Google account for sign-ups or YouTube? Pick Gmail. Need many simple inboxes or Microsoft tools? Outlook is usually the cheaper fit.
